Okay these are the fish currently in my 29 gallon tank.

1 red tailed shark
1 yoyo loach
1 clown pleco
3 corydoras
2 neon tetras
3 black skirt tetras
2 long fin leopard danios
2 honey gouramis
1 red wag female platy
1 female betta
That is 17 fish in all. Is this over stocked? I plan on moving the red tailed shark and yoyo loach into my 75 gal. If it isnt over stocked then I want to get 3 more neons and 3 more danios so they can school. Also a bristle nosed plec and another platy. Would this be okay? But for the moment while I have the red tailed shark and yoyo in the tank would this work?

Oh and I would like to get more yoyos. :D

I was also thinking about geting a couple more corydoras. But I am not sure if that would be going over the limit. I know the red tailed shark needs a bigger tank, thats why I am putting it in the 75 gal.(oh yes you can definatly trust petco  )

Okay would this be okay?

5 neon tetras
3 black skirt tetras
5 leopard danios
1 clown pleco
1 bristle nosed pleco
2 yoyos
1 red tailed shark
5 corys
2 platys
2 honey gouramis
1 female betta

Remember the yoyos and red tailed shark will be rehomed soon.

to me and I am new it seems that you have a LOT of waste makers in that tank, how are you levels and the betta is in with all the others, how is that working out. I think the plan to rehome is good but it is better to rehome THEN get more fish if you stress them you might find yourself having to buy more since some of yours could die.......belive me I experenced this 1st hand and it ain't pretty

The betta is the best fish in the tank. She is best friends with the platy and gouramis trust me. She is probably the niced fish in the tank. I have had her the longest too. She is the oldest in the tank. I have had her since I first started fish keeping.

Also that is just my possible stocking. I am going to put the red tailed shark and yoyo in the 75 gallon tank when it is done cycleing. So they will be in the new tank before I get more fish.

Yoyo's and RTS will be fine together however get another 2-3 yoyo's as they are FAR better in groups of 3 or more. They are semi-aggressive and good swimmers and will hold their own in most fights

OK so based on not having the RTBS and yo-yo's in there i make it about 40" of fish, you need to be looking closer to 30" in a 29g tank. personally I'd say don't get the BN Plec and then you'd be a little bit over but copable with if you have good filtration and maintenance.

I agree with miss Wiggle, bristlenoses are very messy; no such problem with upping the numbers of low waste producers like black neons.

Yeah I probably will have like four yoyos with the rts in the 75 gallon tank. I wont get the BN. Okay so how about this:

3 more neons
3 more danios
1 more platy

And I was thinking about the stocking situation for my new tank. It was given to me from my friend who just got a newer one. Her new tank is a beautiful planted tank with mollys and corys. The only thing is I dont know how big the tank is that she is giving me. It is bigger than 20 gallons and I think it maybe smaller than 30 gallons. Do they make 25 gallon tanks? Cause I was thinking about putting the black skirt tetras and danios in there and getting more black skirts and danios and a couple otos or corys. Also my spare 10 gallon tank is just sitting around so I could put the neons in there and get a couple more. That would make it so I could definatly get more fish, right?

if you have a spare ten sitting around then keep that empty. It's always a good idea to keep a Quarantine/hospital tank handy.

The main issues with stocking are (IMHO) distribution, filtration, airation, and aggression.

Distribution: Is one section of your tank crowded, do you have a whole lot of bottome dwellers and very few top dwellers? if so then your tank is imbalanced and your bottom dwellers will be stressed because of lack of territory.

Filtration: What are your Ammo, NI, and NA levels. If they are 0,0,and X<40 and you think your close to your stocking limit then your filter can probably handle a few more small fish. If you add a few more fish and end up with latent ammonia nI or high nitrates you can increase your filter capacity by adding more filter media, buying an additional filter, or upgrading your entire filtration system. You can also add plants to your tank.

Airation: How large is the top of your tank. If your tank is very tall then that means that you have low surface area. This means that there is less space for oxygen and cO2 exchange between the air and your water. There are calculators to help you figure this one out...I don't have a link handy but I'm sure someone can help you out. You can increase the surface area of your tank by adding a bubble rock or preferably a powerhead. These things stir up your water making more of it come into contact with the air per minute. Not only that but the also cause ripples in the surface which allows a lot more water to contact air at any given time.

Aggression: The most important question you should ask yourself is are my fish getting along, or if your fish aren't supposed to get along then you should ask yourself does each fish have it's own territory, can the weaker fish easily escape from the stronger without getting hurt? Is there enough room in the tank for a few more fish to have there own territory.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, basically what I could think up in a matter of minutes. Stocking to the maximum is a very tricky thing to do. It's a lot easier to just go with the old stand by and say 1" of adult fish per gallon, then again even that rule is tricky...
