i have a 10 gallon tank and i did have mollys and guppys in there but my tank needs cycling and what not so most of them have died. im new to this whole thing...but anyway.... i am thinking of doing an all guppy tank. how many guppys could i put in a 10 gallon tank?? oh ya..and i would have a lil algae eater. thanks =]

EDIT: im not getting the guppys till i get everything figured out with my new tank. i didnt want anyone to think i was getting new guppys right away =]

EDIT: i might throw some tetras in there also...not sure. im thinking all guppy though.

5 fully grow males IMO(if not you will get fry which you do not want!).

Hiya :)

I would personaly have 6 Guppies in there! If you want them to mate wich i dont recommend i suggest you get 2 male and 4 females! If you dont want them to mate i suggest you get 6 males as these have great colour. Unfortunatly most algea eaters get amazingly big! I suggest getting a few snails but be carefull as these can overide your tank! If you going for a all guppy tank i would defonetly only get 6 of them as the recommended is 1 inch of fish per gallon! Guppies get up to 2 inch so were pushing it here! Good Look :)

as for algae eaters, i think ottos would be prefect especially if it will be a planted tank, but they require a mature tank and prefer to live in groups, but i think you could get away with 3 ottos and 6 guppies

Don't try and breed them unless you have got another empty fry tank.If you have not got a fry tank they will interbreed and become deformed.

Why dont u try a mix of small fish al males, Instead of having all the same type.

Don't forget that Guppies aren't as hardy as they used to be. Best bet would probably be to cycle the tank, then buy five small, hardy fish and let the tank mature for at least a month, then return the fish to the shop and get the best Guppies they have.

Actually, I have a friend who didn't cycle her tank and guppies survived-not too long ago either. As long as it's cycled guppies are fine, they were my first fish in an actual big tank (if you'd call 10 gal big  ). They are pretty hardy, my female survived through ich, and columnaris! I think about 6 guppies would be good there-and 3 otos as algea eaters.

the reason i was thinking about getting an all guppy tank was because i had two mollys in my tank with 3 guppys and one of my mollys took a chunk out of my guppy and it died today. I am starting to think of maybe getting guppys and tetras. my boyfriends bro breeds guppys so i can get some from him for free. i am NOT going to Earl May anymore...they know nothing about fish there. and the closest fish shop is PetCo and thats an hour away :(

since i am new to this whole fish thing i dont want to breed any just yet...maybe when i understand everything better i will try it.

when i got my tank someone told me just to keep water in it for a week and it should be okay to put fish in. well a lot of my fish died. i have 2 mollys, and a guppy left. i got a water tester thingy so tonight i am checking the levels for everything. hopefully its okay to do that with the fish in it... ??

so is it better to have all guppys or some guppys and tetras??

thanks everyone for suggestions.

EDIT: i just read that the Oto algea eaters should be put in only tanks that have real plants in them and i dont have that..so i dont know if i could still get em?

In my 10 gal I have 5 Blacktailed Male Guppies & 4 Orange Endler Male Guppies. They have been living in there quite happily for about 3 months now. They are very hardy (they have to be cos I change the tank round every week). I Change at least 40% of water every week. Overstocked??????? but it works for me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get all males. You can't handle the load of fry that could result from a mixed group. You can probably put in 6 comfortably, maybe a couple more after you get comfortable with fishkeeping and if you do alot of water changes.

There are some tetras that going to be okay for a 10gal, some can be nippy towards guppy tails so research the species first.

For algae eaters, stay away from chinese/golden algae eaters and plecos. Ottos make good algae eaters, but I'd avoid them so you can put in more guppies...they can be sensitive to new tanks as well.

Amano shrimp are going to be your best bet in a 10 gal. One apple snail/mystery snail is also good. The shrimp and snails are small in terms of bioload, so you can put more of the guppies you want the tank to focus on.

Personally, I think the fewer species of fish you put in, the better. Especially with a small tank. With alot of different species, you get the Noah's Ark syndrome where things look out of place and jumbled.
