We have a new 60L tank (Tetra AquaArt 60 with internal filter) with 5 fish (2 Gouramis, 3 Black Phantom Tetras) which we've just moved from a 30L bi-orb - the filter didn't appear to have give much water movement so we bought an air filter with two outlets, which are buried at opposite ends of the new tank.

Since moving in the 5 fish they seem perfectly settled in the new tank however we're not sure if we should leave the air pump running 24 hours a day - I know that airpumps are not essential to a healthy tank but I'm not sure if turning them on and off is healthy either?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Some people only run their air pumps during the day because they make to much noise, and they turn them off at night. So you can turn your pump off. As long as your waters surface in the tank is still being agitiated your will be fine with the air pump turned off.Oh! and :hi: to TFF!:fish: :fish:

Thanks Ian - thats what we were thinking of doing - will give it a try! Just noticed you're in South Wales - where are you exactly, we're in South Wales too!

 small world, im in pontypridd

like i said, i've had no problems with it and im sure the fish will be happy with some quiet time

And then again, 99% of everyone else would tell you that air-pumps do sod all anyway apart from 'look good', so it does not matter how long they are on for...

We have several tanks and only use an airstone in one of them. It's only there because the oscar likes playing in the bubbles. Unless you have high water temps and therefore lower oxygen they are not absolutely needed. They look nice to some people, some fish like them, they create water movement, but they are not a must have.
