Hi,

What would be the best way to feed veg? Do you just let it float on the surface or do you sink it? I seen a "screwcumber" for sale on ebay, just wondering if they are any good?

Also which type of veg should i feed my fish, i have 2 dwarf gourami's, small pleco and 6 guppies.

Thanks in advance!

It will be mainly your pleco and guppies who'll enjoy the veg- and they do! Slices of cucumber or courgette (zucchini) can be weighed down with screwcumber or a piece of plant weight, or even a stainless steel teaspoon stuck through it. I find courgette at least sinks of its own accord if you blanch it (boil it ever so slightly). Carrots too. Peas can be lightly boiled, deshelled and crushed slightly and just dropped in, same with broad beans; broccoli just lightly boiled (for the gups, the plec will eat it raw) and dropped in. Spinach slightly scalded can be weighed down as the cucumber, also lettuce.

I leave a chunk of Cucumber in the tank for 2-3 days then remove it (by that time its starting to go gooey)

Do you still feed normal food (like flake) at same time as leaving the veg sat in tank??

Confused, with the general rule of "remove any uneaten food"......

BTW - If guppies can eat lightly cooked veg, (still hard) - do they have teeth then?

It depends on the type of different fish in your tank, my harlequin rasboras won't go for anything that isn't red [seriously], so I give them some bloodworm while the bristlenoses & blue ram make a meal of the veg.

'Remove any uneaten food' applies if you see food gathering in the 'dead spots' where your filtration doesn't circulate, which eventually breaks down and adds to the waste. You can either net it out or feed less, or another method is to employ a few hundred malaysian trumpet snails, plus a couple of generations of bristlenoses - and you needn't worry about food waste again!

I'm pretty sure guppies do not have teeth, but what I do know is that they will try and eat anything that could fit in their mouths. So the soft, deshelled, and crushed peas make an ideal healthy meal for them.

Paul

i feed my cichlids mainly pea (without the shell), i normally cut them up into small enough pieces for the to fit straight into their mouths. i leave them out on a plate/kitchen side for 5/10 mins. for it to defrost, i feed if i defrost it in tank water the pea disintergrates alot more when added to the tank. (they only last around 30 mins max so i dont need to remove)

cucumber i cut a slice of and attach it to a bit of slate with elastic bands. i remove it form there tank around 24 hours time

carrot i cut intro small bit size pieces like i do with the pea's.

i always feed both pellets and veg 6 days a week.
