Hi all! Am looking at tanks to buy after returning to the hobby after a few years away. I'm liking the look of the Aquastyle 620s, but not sure if I should be looking at the 620T? I've heard fish prefer long to tall tanks, and I'd like to have a dwarf Gourami in there, along with some tetras. Petshop did say I could have a couple of male gourami and angelfish, but reading up this seems to be wrong.

Anyway, my question is does anyone have opinions of these tanks? Is long better than tall, and I've heard the filter is a bit loud. Still, seems to be within my budget! So, anyone with any rants or praise before I shell out? Thanks!

You're right, long is better than tall. The additional height of the 620T is really not an advantage for fishkeeping. You could easily keep some tetras and a Dwarf Gourami in the 620S. I don't have any experience with this actual tank, so I can't advise you on the filter/pump noise.

I have a smaller tank in that range, the filter is basically the same as mine, although the powerhead has a higher rating. I have no noise issues from the powerhead.

If you don't fill the tank right up, you can get some water-splashing noise, as the output trickles onto the top of the water, but that's easily rectified.

We had the 620T for our 2 coldwater goldfish, until it cracked on me, water everywhere, but thats another story and can happen on any tank. We was happy with the tall tank and the 2 goldfish seemed very happy in it, the only downside was (and it was our fault), dont skimp on cheaper filter wool. We bought a bulk load of cheaper stuff that was cut to the right size for the filter but when we used it, all seemed fine, then after about 2 days we noticed water was on our laminate floor, the wool had clogged the filter thats at the top of the tank and it started trickling over the top. We bought the correct stuff and it was fine again, morale of the story, try save a few quid/bucks and it could cost you. our laminate flooring is damaged and needs replacing now.

but overall we were happy with the tall tank, the reason we got the tall one was space was limited width ways, if you got space width ways I would get a wider tank than taller

I've had a second-hand 620T for little over a year, while it holds a decent volume (130l), the small surface area for its depth and the lack of tank length meant it has never been able to be used as anything but a grow-on tank tank for small purchased fish or its current use as an emergency QT/sanctuary tank (having to pull fish out of a Rio240 to escape Lionhead Cichlid parents and their ~30 offspring). To get the best out of this style tank (squat cube), I feel the fish keeper needs to be planning a small marine or Tanganyikan setup.

As a comparison, I recently set up a second-hand 48x12x15 (~140l) tank, which gives so many more stocking options; space to swim (my Limones Goodeid youngsters love it, just like Zebra Danios and alike would); far more surface area for gaseous exchange.
