We bought the last of our planned fish today, a large shoal of Green Tiger Barbs, and a shoal of Melon and Odessa Barbs each. The guy at the shop gave us pond bags instead of normal bags so we had plenty of air for the 1.5 hr journey and off we went.

Arriving home I put the bags into float while I visited the bathroom. Upon returning down stairs the mrs had a worried look on her face, both bags looked very cloudy as if the fish had taken great big dumps in the water, very messy. The odessas had lost all the red colouring completely and barely moved while the melons seemed to be flapping. The Tigers had gone a very pale green and looked in bad shape too. I took the decision to net them out straight into the tank without fully acclimatising the fish. It's not what I would normally do but under the circumstances and even with hindsight I think I have made the right decision. The fish looked very stressed indeed.

One thing we always do after netting the fish into the tank is make sure the lights are off and bugger off so to speak, so there are no lights on in the room, no TV and no kids to bother the new inhabitants so off we popped to grandmas for a cup of tea and a bit of cake.

Upon returning I realised I had forgotton to turn the timer off for the main lights but before shutting them off I thought I would have a good look around and check them out. The odessas red stripe had come back and looked even more striking than at the shop, and the tigers had all gone a nice deep green except for one. All the melons are shoaling together but the others don't seem to have got it together yet. My other worry is my existing odessa I have had for ages who came with my first set ups who had outlived all the other guys he came with and is a nice size and had a very striking deep red stripe and an almost neon tinge to his silvery areas seems to have lost some colouring, perhaps he was happy being the only odessa or perhaps he has forgotton who he is as he likes to hang about with the new tigers.

I hope they make it and I know some people might think it was a mistake to net them all out into the tank early but I feared they might die in the poohey water. I guess only time will tell but they look a lot happier in the tank than they did in the bags.

That sounds very eventful indeed..amazing how fish can be so quick in changing colour. Wonderful that they are now doing well. Let us know how everything gets on with them!! :)

Hope they are recover and live happy long lives. I dont see why they wouldnt since they are all doing fine at the moment. Your current odessa might just be a little shy since all the new tank mates have arrived. Give them time

Everyone seems fine today, all feeding well and getting along fine. I am so glad they are looking better as the only way you could tell the Melons from the Odessas in the bag was by counting the spots.

thats good news, hope they continue to thrive for you :)

sometimes that's the most appropriate descision to make, i did it just this weekend when i re-homed a syno from lakeyGal, they'd got stuck in traffic on the journey and he'd been in transit longer than expected. i floated him to adjust the temp and he was very clearly distressed so decided to just release him. he calmed down within a fw minutes of being in the tank and is doing fine now so i think it was the right descision too.

whichever method of acclimitising you use there is a risk, you have to make a judgement call what carries the least risk in each situation, you may not get i right 100% of the time, but i don't think anyone can criticise you for making an informed judgement call and doing what you think is right at the time.

I feel a lot better with all the replies and for seeing them do so well. Obviously time will tell.
