okay, so i have recently acquired another 55G tank, and am working on stocking options. thus far, i have decided on one of the following:

african cichlids... specifically jewel cichlids, with a few others. i would have a sand substrate with some decorative rocks and perhaps a couple small plants. the only questions i have would be how many fish i could fit into the tank, as well as how many of each fish would do well together. also, what can go with jewel cichlids?

OR

various fish that i like. these would include two pairs of rams (1 blue pair, 1 gold pair) with a shoal of neons or cardinals. other options would be rainbows (australian, turquoise, etc.) and golden wonder killies, or perhaps a large school of tiger barbs. which of these fish would go well together? the tank would be planted with some bogwood or decorative rock, with sand as substrate.

OR

continue with south american cichlids. i was considering getting a red snook or a blood parrot... or perhaps a pair of angels with various other fish. i would LOVE to have discus, but they're just so expensive... they run about $80 a fish around here as far as i know

anyhow, this is a clean slate to start on. ideas and advice are quite welcome! let me know what you all would do with a tank like this. :) enjoy!

im setting upa 55g and im putting lots of plants in it and this is what i plan to do once i have funds.
5 khuli loaches
6 phantom tetras
6 albino corys
6 glofish
5 guppy
3 sunset platy
6 diamond tetra
6 neon tetras
1 pleco.
6 black skirt tetras
that is my idea

I'm going to do a colony of shell dwelling cichlids in a 30. You can do something like that. A good colony of shellies is usually quite active and entertaining.

One of my ideas when I get a 55G is a rainbow-focused tank.

not too into the shell-dwellers or the community fish. i already have one community tank, so i'm looking for something different.

african oddball planted tank perhaps?

couple bichirs
couple synodontis cats
couple butterfly fish
other african oddballs...

and then try to stick with aquatic plants from their origin/habitat

I don't know, it sounds like fun to me :)
