I am a tropical fish enthusiast who is going away to college. I will be living in an apartment-style dorm for the year. I have a five gallon tank that is currently not being used, and would love to bring it to school with me. Feeding during breaks will not be a problem, as I could just attach an auto-feeder during my absense. At the most, it would be a month....too long?

I would like to simply put a dwarf puffer in the tank....maybe a cory as well, but nothing else. Once summer hits, I would transport the fish by bag....

Does this sound too troublesome? Would a puffer be all right with this? Please, any thoughts, comments, suggestions, warnings....

Thank you!

Your current ideas for would be tank inmates wouldnt work, dwarf puffers require live/frozen food and cories need to be kept in groups of at least 3 or more. A month is a long time to leave a tank unattended, at least one water change would be needed in that time with such a small tank.

That is a very long time, it's hard for a tank to be relatively balanced when it's that small. Also, DPs are messy eaters and so they need more frequent water changes than other fish, so a month is definitely too long to leave a tank unattended, especially one with a dwarf puffer in it. Also, unless there are other auto-feeders, ones that supply flakes won't really work because puffers don't really eat flakes, and hardly even notice them.

Hmm... thanks for the vital info. Any ideas on what to do? Or should I just stick to some safer bets?

I would say find out what your schedule is going to be before making any choices like this one, fish keeping is a responsibility along with being a hobby.

Man if i was going to callage i would most definitly do it. But one thing to think about is the fact that there is a slight chance that the auto feeder might stop feeding while you are gone for a month at the longest.(just a thought) 8)
