I'm going to start a new 46 gallon planted tank soon and I can't decide on a filter for it. Does anyone have reccomendations?

if you got hte money then i suggest canister filters, though i dont know much about them, or you could try a hang on back filter, and IMO i like Aquaclears for the options you have iwht media, making it like a mini canister essentially, but canister filters are your best bet from what ive read, and members on this forum like eheims, which are more expensive.

I'm very happy with my AquaClear 70. I've been runnng AC on my tank since I started it. I recently replaced my filter b/c my sand substrate had gunked up the impeller to the point of no return. I could have just bought a new impeller, but decided to go for the whole hog and replace the whole thing.

Definitively a canister filter because of easy maintenance, and it looks so much neater than having something hanging on the back. Good brands include: Eheims Classic Line (people seem to have more problems with Ecco), Tetratec (= Marineland if you are in the US), Fluval and Jebo. Most popular on this forum seem to be Eheim and Tetratec. I am getting myself a Tetratec since it is supposed to be so silent.

Thanks for the info. I did a bit of research. The Aqua Clear 70 seems to be the best filter for the money. It's for 30-70 gallons and does a good 300 gph and for only about $40. I also like the media options the AC offers. The downside with the external cannisters is the price. The local stores don't even carry them, which means ordering online with added shipping costs which would only add expense to an already pricy filter. Even the Eheim ecco would cost me about $100.
