I have a tank just laying around and I wondered what I should put in it. I was thinking about a few 4-5 in fish but I dunno what.

Kribensis! Just my oppinion as they are my fav! Either that or angel's some corries, and some tetra's!

I saw one at my lfs. I have hard water how do they handle it?

How hards are you talking? Mine in 7.8 adn i have had krib's live adn breed in it! I dont have any rigth now though! They are probably raised in your water anyway! Also, you cannot put 2 males together, or 2 female's( femael's, maybe but depends on tank size!). They will radily breed. With hard water most of the batch will be male!!!!!!!!! They are quite beautiful fish! The one in my avvy is a breeding female.

so it would be a pair and that would be it?

I was looking into brackish but the fish all seem to be really dull looking besides the mollies...
