Does a 1 gallon bowl go through a cycling process as well? There also seems to be some kind of slime coating on top and floating in the bowl? Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks for the help.

No. What are you keeping in it? A Betta is about the only thing that can be housed in the bowl. Also you will have to change the water often.

Sounds like possible oils on the top.
Do you have a lid covering the top of the bowl?
Do you spray any chemicals around the bowl?

The layer of thick sime on top is due to no agitation of the water, it isnt harmful but if you don't like it just agitate it every so often. Actually a bowl does still need to go through a cycle but Bettas are pretty tough so no extra procdures really need to be taken (i've head Betta come in to my store after shipping in ammonia with upto 8.0 ppms of Ammonia! This fish were still alive and lived on...
