refugium discus tropical

Hi everyone I saw a video on you tube in a fish store in America and there was a large discus tank with a refugium set up on it. He said that he hadn't done a lot of water changes on it I think he said six in a year. I'm going to start keeping discus soon and I know you have to do loads of water...
