Sad news, the jewel began wreaking havoc today so has gone on to its new home. Suspect it may have been a male that was taking his time to colour up. Today was significantly more colourful and fins also looked different. Was chasing every tank mate around and also had a go at the chocolate (poor...
Mine were easy peasy, they paired up (can get quite territorial when breeding so you may have to plan what you will do if/when they pair up), laid the eggs and did all of the work. As long as they have enough space they will take care of the fry quite well. You can also give them a flat surface...
Corydoras, bristlenose plecos, and acaras.
My pair of acara have fry all the time and do all of the work, I just have to move parents at a certain size.
Update.
All is well in the tank. The female jewel is as she was, not causing any problems (hasn't coloured up any more so still assuming that it is female).
The chocolate is healing well, his tail is regrowing, eating well and no problems swimming about.
I didn't do enough research either, I just took what was available and regretted it 1 minute after putting it all in. But it is too late. And I was given quite a lot...
I think what I actually wanted was frogbit. I still don't know anything about it, but from pictures, it is what I wanted.
Well the severums aren't hungry any more, my air line ring now appears to be working.
I will have to leave it for the next few days whilst I'm away then let the battle of the duckweed commence.
I'm convinced my filter flow is slower already from where it was getting knocked around last night...
I've just nipped over to my tank as I can hear some splashing, and my severum is eating it. I didn't realise they ate it.
Unfortunately I am away for the next few days so don't want it to take over while I am gone, but am hoping a combination of decent surface movement and a hungry severum might...
I stupidly welcomed duckweed in to my tank and did not consider the fact it was going to get knocked around by my filter flow (external filter, fluval 307).
I asked a relative for some as it's been so hard to get hold of any floating plants, and he did give me the warning "once you put it in...
Thanks this is really helpful, good point about the other male not killing it.
I'm watching him/her now and it is totally different in behaviour to the other one. Stays out of everything else, including the bristlenose plecos. Quite a shy little fish for a jewel. At least, compared to the last one!
I've actually just made another thread to ask for opinions on sex, I probably should have just posted here. Still no change in behaviour from the remaining jewel but it is now colouring up a bit, the colour on the body has deepened and the fins are brighter than they were. Now wondering if I had...
