Does the substrate have to be sand and if not are the ones you mention suitable to other substrates? thanks

Someone in the shop recommended Danios as a good fish to start with. What other fish will they be compatible with-Its only a tiny tank and i don't intend on putting too many fish in and not even all at once. Thanks

I had this tank given to me-so i thought if i can succesfully keep fish i would then buy a bigger display tank :good:

At the moment just heating up to make sure it's working properly then or just now i will read through the stickys about preping the tank etc before fish--What temp are the fish kept at though? BTW i'ts up to 26.2 now.

I'ts gone up half a degree or more now-so maybe it was just a bit slow to kick in after i turned it up. Il let you know in a bit if it's still rising LOL. BTW what temp should i be aiming to get to? About 28c or is that on the high side?

Filter i think-It's one of the small fluval tanks.

Got up this morning and the temp had risen to 24c. Thought it would be higher than this so tured the heater to max but temp still not rising. Just to add i have the thermometer near the bottom of the tank. Thanks

Yeah-I've seen the water testing kits-so il get one of those- and see what the woman in the shop says unless someone on here can mention anything? Thanks I just saw the post above that goes through the stages before putting fish in.

I've gone from 17.4 to 18.9 so slowly moving in the right direction. If there was nothing wrong with the other heater then i guess it would be good to have a spare.

Thought i had the heating problem sorted-went an bought a heater and a digital thermometer and cant get the temp even to 18c. The woman in the shop said it would take about two hours to heat the tank, but it's still not getting warm.

Just added a new heater and seems to have done the trick. Il put a thermometer in as well when i buy some fish. What is a good starter fish? Something likely to survive in a new tank but not expensive? Thanks

Ok- but yesterday i felt the water in the several of the tanks in the shops and it felt how i expected it too. Mine however feels cold. probably not much warmer then my outside pond.

At the moment just by feeling the water - The temps are definately low and possibly not heating up at all.

Hi-Recently aquired a small tank (18x12 x12) -I have a 55watt heater that seems to heat up iself though the water does not. One strange thing that happens is when first turned on, the water heats up after about five minutes but then goes cold and remains cold. Is this a fault with the heater...
