I have a 30 gal FW tank currently only with 6 dwarf rainbows and 2 siamese algae eaters. All is peaceful and well.
Would a single green terror or parrot cichlid be compatabile and suitable in this tank?
thanks
Day 9
Same again -
Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - very high
Nitrates - very high but test probably affected by high nitrites
ph - 8
More ammonia going in to get back to 5 ppm.
This is getting boring. Same results again this morning.
Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - off chart
Nitrate - ~50
ph - 8
Added ammonia again.
I have not been reporting here but I also check ammonia after 12 hours, and it has gone to 0 at that point each day, but wait until 24 hour check to...
Repeat result this morning
ammonia - 0
nitrite - hign off chart
nitrate - ~50
another 5ml ammonia solution going in.
I am surprised to be here so soon also. I only surmise it is because of the mature filter media I got from my friends tank but I really don't know.
Good for You!. I'm at the point where my ammonia goes from 5ppm to 0 in under 12 hours, but nitrites still up to the moon. Hoping for a break soon.
Maybe your results will brings me good luck.
More of the same this morning
ammonia - 0
nitrite - off the chart
nitrate -20++
more ammonia added. will see how long it takes for nitrite rise to stop and start going down.
The instructions with my test kit say to rinse with tank water before the test, so that's what I do. Then after the test, I rinse with tap water to get the test tube clean. But then again, what do I know???
It is now 24 hours since last ammonia addition to bring level up to 5. Current test results are
Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - ? - off the chart high
Nitrate - 20+
Will add 5 ml ammonia solution again this morning and check level in an hour or two. Hopefully we are making progress here.
I calculated the amount to add and then verified the result with a test about 2 hours later. It is on the low side of 5.
If the concentration of the ammonia I bought really was 30 %(I suspect 27-28%), then I trust the calculation as much as the test, but will use both to verify results, and...

agree. test is to indicate level and direction of movement, not to provide absolute finite results. These test have built in inacuracy in every phase.
1. Measuring the water volume
2. Reagent volume. Are all "drops" from all bottles exactly the same size? I think not
3. Comparison to color...
Correct. Is just a matter of concentration and I am sure the test is designed so it is not too critical anyway. You can't get "exactly" 5 ml in the test tube and "how big is a drop?".
