Well if it's heavily planted, ammonia is hte prefered nitrogen source for plants, so obvious they'll suck it up pretty fast. In a heavily planted tank, cycling a tank would be hard, as the plants will use up the nitrogen before the bacteria can get to it. But this only applies if the plants are...

start planting it too, heavily planted means , shrimp can hide if your betta turns, and helps keep ammonia, nitrites and nitrates down.

i would also reccomend planting the tank for better water chemistry and better home for hte betta.

When i 1st got my betta he kept getting sucked onto the filter (really weak filter ,_,) now he has no problems with a much stronger filter(3x gph of older one). He learnt his lesson and has become a stronger swimmier ; D

Could try driftwood, beautiful and it works for buffering hte ph. In my case, and not sure about others, but ive read that others have had sucess with driftwood.
