My (previously healthy) cherry shrimp tank has become completely infested with ostracods (seed shrimp) - enough to make the water look cloudy. They seem to be outcompeting the shrimp and one snail for food. I did a lot of research and have concluded that the only sensible way forward is to start...

Copepods or seed shrimps - maybe? The ones in my cherry shrimp tank look just like your photo. Do they move around? If so, they are probably these harmless, tiny crustaceans. On another thread someone suggested that Endler’s livebearers might like to eat them......

Well done! Just a thought... Will it involve scuba diving with sharks/rays/turtles? (We can all dream....)

Plus - when we went on holiday nobody could find us for two weeks..... If it was an emergency BBC radio would broadcast a message e.g. “Will Mr J. Smith, who is touring Devon in a Morris Minor car, please contact St. Helier hospital where his uncle is gravely ill.” Mobile phones were science...

In my youth we used to chip messages on to small stone slabs...

Is anyone keeping a running total? I was going to add on the latest few post amounts but when I tried to find the last running total I couldn’t view most of the thread. Probably because I’m a complete Luddite and incompetent with this new fangled technology....

OK - I think the bucket and pipette method is the way to go. (And I just happen to have a white bucket and a wide end pipette available!) Thanks for the help everybody. I hope the new babies will be grateful..... I just couldn’t bear the idea of being a mass shrimp-killer...

Thanks, but I think that herding them anywhere is a non-starter - I can’t even see them without a magnifying glass most of the time! The fine mesh over the inlet tube of the water siphon might be possible tho’......

My cherry shrimp tank has a swarm of tiny, tiny baby shrimp. Which is great..... it’s the first time one of my females has had a large brood. However, I have a practical problem. How do I manage a water change without sucking up all the lovely babies? All sensible suggestions gratefully accepted!

Re. My previous post - just worked out that my pond has about 5600 litres of water.

I can add another 154 litres in tanks (Plus a 6ft x 11ft x 3ft deep goldfish pond in the garden - but I don’t know if that counts towards the total. It needs attention every day at the moment as we’re in “green slime algae explosion” season in the UK.)
