    Upsizing Freshwater Setup

Cool, thanks for the reply :)   I'll read more into a planted tank then. You say for planted I should 'dirt' the tank? Is this special aquarium substrate or would any good quality soil/fertiliser bag work?   OK I'll stick to fishless once I get round to it then, I still have some ammonia...

    Upsizing Freshwater Setup

Hey everyone :)   Currently I have a small setup, 40L, 4 Harlequins, 4 Endlers & 3 Peppered Corys. The tanks been set up about 6 months now and everything is going fine. I'm wanting to get a larger tank soon, and make it more of a centrepiece in the room rather than just a 'hobby' tank. I came...

    Corydoras Dying.

Well I did daily changes and the rest of the fish seem fine and the tank seems to have cleared up too... I am just confused because i didnt think a ammonia/nitire spike would cause visibly different water... however it does seem a mini cycle or spike was the cause... even though the tank was...

    Corydoras Dying.

I figured the slight ammonia and nitrite was from a small spike, as obviously even though it is cycled it still needs to adjust to the fish's bioload. I do use flakes but I stopped because the Rasboras don't eat them and cory's usually leave them on the bottom.... So I thought I better stop...

    Corydoras Dying.

Hey everyone.   Long story short: I set up my tank (gravel sub, unplanted, 40L) successfully fishless cycled it, and stocked with 5 HQ Rasboras and 3 Peppered Corys about 3-4 weeks ago. 4 days ago the smallest of the Corys was floating to the top, a gentle tap on the glass made him swin down...

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Ahh Ok/// Do you think I'd be ok to pick up 2 more corys in a few weeks? to make it 5 and 5? Or just leave it at 3 and 5?

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Yeah we're looking to get more, but didn't wanna overload it immediately, just like everything else in this hobby it seems patience is the key :P   Sticking with the small fish, what else would be worth looking into? Besides the Tetra variants... Im hoping If I can keep the fish on the small...

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Just an Update!   I reached the 12 hours mark for 0/0 on thursday, and redosed friday morning to check and friday night we were back at 0/0   Today we went to get our first fish and came home with 3 Peppered Corys and 5 Harlequin Rasboro's   So far tank and fish are all doing great, and...

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Ok so 12 hours on, ammonia is 0 and Nitrites are about 2ppm so not quite at the 12 hour mark yet.   What's the best way from here? Let the bacteria sort ALL the Ammonia > Nitrate before redosing, or just put 4ppm in every 24 hours and retest 12 hours after dosing until it is zero?

My Cycle Is Not Working How People Say It Is Suppose To

Bit of a novice here, but If the tank is planted (I am assuming due to their being an algae problem too) then wouldn't the plants convert Nitrates into other compounds**, therefore giving the test kit nothing to read... as there geniunely are no nitrates?   (**Nitrogen/Oxygen I think, but don't...

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

SKY BLUE BABYYYY!   Added another 4ppm yesterday afternoon after posting, and just did my tests.   Ammonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrates - 80   ^_^ I don't wanna jinx it but I think I'm done!!   I guess the final thing is to dose 4ppm now, and then check both again at bedtime. :D :D

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Good News :D   I've been dosing 4ppm of ammonia every 24 hours while waiting to see a change in nitrites. I was starting to lose faith because everytime I tested it was a deep purple. Today I felt like doing more accurate results.... I took 5ml of tank water in one phial, 1ml tank / 4ml tap in...

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Just did a test along with a 1ml/4ml diluted test. Although it took longer to turn, it shortly turned the same fuschia colour :P Meaning my Nitrites are ridiculously off the charts...

    Brand New Tank, Bacterial Bloom?

Thanks mate. Just added 3ppm of Ammonia again. Anything the NOB's like that I could do to improve? I've set the temp to 30-31'C because I know they like it warmer, but what about aeration/surface disturbance? Would this speed up/hinder the development?
