the only way to find out is just by testing your water, wood will defineately cause a drop in ph, also especially mopani wood in my experience can discolour your water even if you do allow it to leach out in buckets before its in the tank, in my opinion wood has no place in a tang tank.

rusty plecos are great for an african setup, mines doing really well in a frontosa tank and they eat fish , if you went with an mbuna setup this would be ideal too.

I have a beautiful frontosa setup, i absolutely adore my fish and my tank, the only thing that detracts is the horrible smear type patterns that appear on the inside of the glass and the amount of algae on the glass surfaces. Rocks and decor dont appear to be affected that badly, i have no idea...
