Months, probably. An easier option is take some of your already mature media from the filter/s in the big tank and transfer as much as you safely can into your new filter/s for your shrimp tank. Job done.   Terry.

As long as you keep the media that you may have 'grown' in there, there shouldn't be an issue. A properly cycled tank will prove results of NitrAte...either you have a MASSIVELY planted tank, are doing big daily water changes OR your tank is not fully cycled.... did you see readings of ammonia...
