Never had a gourami before, so I don't know about the swimming room. As for fish to put in it, I really enjoy watching Ghost Shrimp. You should get about 7 of those and watch them swim around. They also, clean your tank. If you want fish, I would go with some Zebra Danios, they are pretty hardy...

Fishless cycling is so much easier... :) It is even easier to clone a filter and move that to the new tank...

If you have access to mature filter media, that can speed things up alot.

Yeah, get the master test kit. The liquid tests are sooo much better! As for fish, you can go with some Glo-Light Tetras. They are orange and very cool looking when schooling. :)
