how did you get into fish keeping

the only fish i've kept are bettas. i've told this story in posts before, but like the other few members here i wasn't doing it very well. it wasn't intentional, of course, but my mother and i could've researched beforehand and we didn't. they were put in either a small little "betta tank" that...

one last post - advice is appreciated

i'll take some new pictures soon, but i don't currently have any. i took another look at the pictures, and in them there's no way you'd be able to see the velvet. it's more below his head, and none of the pictures are taken from that angle. when i shine a flashlight on him and look there, i can...

one last post - advice is appreciated

a few on this forum suggested the almond leaves for their antibacterial properties, so i figured that i would consider purchasing them just in case. as stated in my previous response to another person, no, i don't really want to purchase a bunch of new medications to treat it, but only because...

one last post - advice is appreciated

i started a new one because my old posts have already been drowned and new ones appear at the top of the list so i get replies a lot easier. i know velvet can be cured, but i'm having trouble with it. the tank is covered with a towel and the temp has been raised as high as it can go (which...

one last post - advice is appreciated

i made a post a little while ago asking a few more questions regarding my unwell betta's bloating, but it didn't get any responses and i can't stop thinking about my fish and what i'm going to do with him. i don't know if i should continue to try to treat his issues or if i should just euthanize...

    another question regarding the bloating

i've made a few posts now about my betta and his physical issues, including his bloating. people recommended that i purchase daphnia since the peas wouldn't work, but i don't know when i'm going to be able to ask my parents to purchase some for me. with that being said, he probably shouldn't go...

    betta's not getting better

i do agree that the live plants look much nicer. in fact, i'd love to have a planted tank someday. however i'd much rather have fake plants in his tank for him to hide behind than nothing at all. your sorority is beautiful, by the way. i've heard of the betta leaf, so i'll buy one of those...

    betta's not getting better

oh, i didn't know that. i'd still want to add a supplement too. alright, that makes sense to me. as of now he doesn't appear to be necessarily weak (he still seems to swim around a lot when i'm watching him) but who knows how much worse he could get. it wouldn't hurt to have it in there...

    betta's not getting better

i'll go look at petsmart. that's probably where i'll get it from if i can't find any live cultures in the US. i really do appreciate the help. what does anubias do? also, was that picture just to provide an idea? it doesn't appear that the plant in the image is actually real, and i'd assume...

    betta's not getting better

i've heard of daphnia. where would you recommend i get some? have you bought any yourself? the tank is properly heated and i do believe it's cycled (it's probably been about a year now since i moved him there, so i'd assume so). didn't think to take out the other medication first. would water...

    betta's not getting better

i've discussed in other posts about my one fish, my betta. he has velvet and his "bloating" has only gotten worse. i've been treating with Cupramine for about two weeks now - how long it says to treat for - with no differences. i don't think i'm doing anything wrong. it's still there. i've...

    Betta Questions

that's a pretty fair argument, and like i said, the more, the better. i'd rather go the extra mile for my pet than less than what it actually requires. i've never tried to keep a betta in a 2.5 though, so i guess i wouldn't really know myself.

    Betta Questions

1/4 of a gallon? i agree, that's far too small for any fish. it always would be. 2.5 gallons, however? i think it's arguable. lots of people i know use tanks that small for bettas with few difficulties as long as it's taken care of correctly, but the more, the better.

    Betta Questions

i'd say it'd be much better to have a filter with a tank under 5 gallons, though any tank could probably use one, no matter the inhabitants. just like what Fro said, if the temperatures aren't at around 74-82 degrees Fahrenheit - on average and with little fluctuation - with the light, you...

    Betta Questions

my betta doesn't currently have a filter but i'm going to be getting him the same one. based on the reviews i've read it can be pretty strong (even for 5-10 gallons), so you might have to stuff some media (like sponge) into the output to slow down the flow. that way he won't get blown around.
