I have two in the tank atm. One is digital, and the other is a mercury thermometer. The heater lights up when it is working. By sudden increase, what do you mean? Some times it falls to 28.c, then rises to 29c, all in a matter of mins.

The room is at 20c. I have two thermometers in at the moment, both giving the same reading. The wall feels fine.
