Only you know the demands on your time, I would vote for downsizing.  Most of us do not have or want to spend 3 hours weekly doing water exchanges.  The Fluval is a cool looking tank, and should take much less time to maintain.  I have a Fluval Spec which takes about 15 minutes for weekly water...

I think you should speak to your geologist friend(s). Water soluble surface contaminants will show up in a short time.  Even granite when exposed to acidic rain will dissolve, but I think we are talking about hundreds or thousands of years.  Will it make a different in the short time your fish...

Don't give up, there should be lots of tips from others here.  Some of it will be useful .  The tank looks good.

Can I try that, the Oscar suggestion?  (kidding)  I had to look up how big that fish is.  Are you suggesting that I can put more fish in the 5 gallon tank?  It would seem that all the pet stores violate their own "inch per gallon" rule since all the displays are crammed to the gills.

Hello All,   Just got an aquarium after many years without one.   What do you suggest for the type(s) and the amount of fish to get for a 5 gallon desk-top tank?  The pet store folks all say only 5 inches of total fish length.  Thanks.
