I actually ended up returning the gold fish to the store, so it's just two guppies in the 25 gallon tank with the betta. Honestly, so far so good!

Thanks everyone. I got a filter sponge pack that actually happen to fit perfectly and there is 3 in a pack. I will look into the additives for nitrate and ammonia reduction. For now it is just one betta in the 5.5 and I got another betta for the 25 gallon with two female guppies.

I recently got two bettas, both females, from different stores. I put one in a filtered five gallon tank with minimal flow and live plants and driftwood. I put the other one in a big 25 gallon with two female guppies. The one in the 25 gallons seems so happy and full of life, always swimming...

With sorority tanks, is there a way to tell which betas will be a better match for eachother? Do you want all plain ones, or all coloured or is it completely trial and error. Also, why does keeping 6 in a large tank more likely to be successful than keeping two in a smaller tank?
