Going fishing in West Africa - a journal

I know. It is impossible to find good cichlids that aren't modern-bred or basic. This is bad that across every fish store I could find in a 45 minute radius from my house I couldn't find jack dempseys that aren't electric blue. Flag acaras have been a request of mine for years and I still can't...

I seem to be losing the war

Yes, Otos can handle most forms of algae but BBA (Black beard algae) is one of the few things it really doesn't touch. Amanos will eat them, but you mentioned they will be stressed. Nerite snails will eat them, but they are slower, and the plants are slightly harder for them compared to...

    A Pleasant Meeting

The female looks very strange from what I see. Normally, and with my previous cockatoos they have a dark stripe. However, maybe yours are a variation or breed. They can have many patterns, even spots rather than stripes.

Ah, I always thought you needed to go through many securities before being allowed to bring fish back.

    Fish position in the aquarium

This is quite interesting. I noticed a similar thing with my old 135 gallon community Rio Negro blackwater natural/biotope tank. I attempted to make many caves and nooks for the cichlids I intruduced to the tank. I had put a pair of Agassiz Apistos, and a pair of checkerboard cichlids (Dicrossus...

Echinodorus / Amazon Sword Help Please

Mine seem to be flexible, they have done well in prev. setup which at one point was soft and acidic, but also was neutrally hard at another point. I used to go to those aquarium or pet "conventions." I have been in the hobby for 9-10 years now. I used to breed guppies/endlers, and bettas, along...

Your back in Canada now? Did you need a permit to bring the fish with you?

Echinodorus / Amazon Sword Help Please

For my crypts. They have been looking very "weak," in this new setup. Probably from adjustment. I had like 3 to begin with about 3-4 years ago and they chuted into like 20. Should I pull them out slightly as well? -or will it not matter since they aren't swords.

    Starting Again

Welcome back to the hobby! Hopefully this time it is for good. 30cm^2 is about 7.5 gallons. I would recommend fish that work in a nano setup. I saw @MattW mentioned water parameters, so follow those instructions. If I had to recommend beginner-esque fish for a 7.5 gallon, chili rasboras would be...

    Honey Gourami male or female

Welcome to the hobby. These are specifically very peaceful species, but I do understand the concern around the males still getting somewhat feisty with each other. With all gourami/bettas and all members of their family, they may switch sexes before maturity. There are still characteristics...

bad couples… alpha female is too bossy… I don’t think I’m going to get out of this one…

I used to own spotted silver dollars, but you have red hooks. They still behave similarly, so I can probably help out here. From what I see, this is probably the case: 1) Social Hierarchy Stress Silver dollars are schooling fish with loose dominance hierarchies, so when you mix individuals...
