I agree with Colin_T on this one. I wouldn't setup anything bigger than 55 gallons if I was about to move in 6 months.
A 60 gallon sump is plenty for a large number of tanks. There is no set exact size you should use but you want it big enough to be effective and to fit your equipment. I used a...
I do not ever recommend covering your tank. You really need air/gas exchange into the water which is why good surface turbulence is advised.
This is what I really think happened....
Yes, over time your water evaporates. In my 90 gallon I would lose at least a half gallon a day!
As this...
My Bangai Cardinals (I had two) bred and the male held eggs for so long. He doesn't eat for over a week!
It is hard to tell what the purple one is. I first thought it might be a dwarf flame angel, but they don't really have purple on them.
Possibly a royal gramma, but again I can't see a good...
Ozzie! I think that was my fault on the notifications... HAHA. How have you been? The tanks look gorgeous. How is the shallow sand bed working out for you? Do you have any burrowing species at all?

Hey! Welcome. I'd love to see some pics of this 550 gallon setup!
Good to know we have an engineer in our midst. During my absence I managed to grab my Chemical Engineering degree so I finally know someone with common interest! hah.

What water are you using to mix salt etc.? It really should be RO/DI water and the water/salt mixed prior to entering the tank. Using conditioner with tap water is unadvised especially if you plan to keep any inverts because if there is even a small amount of copper they will just die.

Wow... I realize I kind of stopped updating this a long time ago. LOL I will update with some pics of what happened. Now we are years later and the tank has been broken down, but I will show the beauty of what took place.

How are the fish doing now? If it is the substrate that caused this, it is common that a lot of detritus buildup happens and when you stir the ammonia level increased rapidly.
BIG, means expensive. I priced out all the good stuff for a 210... it was over $6,000 USD
That includes everything from heaters to rocks to tank/stand/sump, etc.
It does not include any corals, or inverts

I'd watch it closely for a couple days and see what happens with it before you go dosing your tank with anything. I have never dosed my tank with anything, nor do I want to. The salt should provide everything needed for my tank and inverts besides food for fish.. I don't have huge sps soaking up...
