Thanks very much for the advice and good link. I was wondering if the high kh / low gh ideal I was hoping for would turn out to be hard/impossible to achieve and getting there may have undesirable results.

Is it possible to attain a decent/high KH level (always good to have a good buffer against spikes) whilst also having a relatively low GH level as your fish prefer soft water? Seems to be easy to have a healthy buffer if you have hard water but not the case if you want soft water. Any tips or...

I have that tank, only had it a few weeks though. Very happy with it and nice setup. The pipes to the external filter are connected to the base unit (opted for the tan/chocolate colours as opposed to silver/black) and it all fits together well. Looks great and gets my vote

Could not reccommend them enough.. Ideally get a male and female pair as this will keep the bickering down a little, this should be the only trouble they cause. They are a little fussy about the water and like it soft. They will be fine in a community setup.

Agreed there, it does seem a very good filter and very quiet. Did initially manage to somehow not get the rubber seal in place when first turning on and ended up with a wet carpet but other than that I'm impressed.

I think rams are good, great characters and peaceful community fish. (although sometimes not too peaceful with each other)

Hope you're wrong, this was the advice I got from a reliable source who did exactly the same without issue. Paranoia now dictates that I will add a further two loads but do you have any specifics as to why this bacteria will not last over 24 hours without a food source?
