    Which Cichlids to Choose?

one thing i find confusing is, if the fish have been raised in captivity, i.e. bred for generations in a tank and not in south america or african lakes, wont they do well as long as the tank parameters are the same they've been raised in? (i live on the other side of the world, the fish come...

Going on holiday / how to keep my fish alive

Hi all I'm planning on going away for 10 days next week, but I'm becoming increasingly worried as to how to manage my fish when I'm away. I have a pet sitter coming once a day, who will feed the fish (I usually leave the daily fish feeds in medicine containers so it's a set amount, to guard...

    stocking a 80L cube tank

Hi, The new tank i got, is a cube - 45cm in all directions. I have 2 other larger tanks (150L with cichlids, and a 160L with community fish - these are regular, rectangle tanks). The idea was to downsize from the 160L to the 80L, moving some of the fish to the new smaller tank, but I think I've...

gourami has parasite / fungal infection - too late to help him?

i have had 12 neons and a powder blue gourami in a 65l tank since Oct / November.. all going well, i did notice the gourami had 'dents' over his body, but no sign of illness, swimming fine, not rapid breathing, acting normal, eating, and the dents didn't get deeper, but i kept an eye on him...

    2nd hand tank, cycled already?

GREAT NEWS! I moved my 6 x odessa barbs into the new tank, joining the 6 x glass bloodfin tetras, and it's working great! They swim in their wee schools, but also mingle and swim together as a bigger group. Probably helps that the odessa's prefer mid bottom to middle of the tank, and the...

High nitrates in tap water - help!

GREAT NEWS! I added Nitro-zorb into the filter -really tightly squeezed in, and after 1.5 days, my nitrate levels this morning are testing at 5 . That's lower than my tap water!! I think the seachem matrix possibly helped, but adding the nitra-zorb has DEFINITELY helped.

There is only 4 fish in a 160L tank, so def not too many. The fish have only been in there since yesterday. Water changes - - its adding more nitrates into the water, so what I've been doing is waiting until the level of nitrates in the tank is higher than the level of nitrates in the tap water...

    High nitrates / grvel depth

Hi As I've posted in two other threads, I've discovered my tap water is high in Nitrates. (I've had great suggestions as to how to remedy that). Can the level of gravel in my tank influence the nitrate levels? If so, Am I better to have shallow or deep gravel in my tank? Currently I have...

High nitrates in tap water - help!

Ok, I'll try that. I've found out the figure quoted on the Council webpage about the level of nitrate is actually the level of nitrate-nitrite. So when they report its 4.7mg /l, the pure nitrate level is close to 25. My tap water comes from two sources, and blended together, one source is...
