when i start up a tank i usually just add a couple of swordtails or other inexpensive fish that are hardy and wait a couple of weeks and everything seem ok by then.your local pet shop will give you some credit for any live fish you return.this of course is a natural option.i always ask my shop...

but plants can reduce the ammonia jesse.in my pond they clear up the water.goldfish will eat the rotting ends of off plants so they are good in a planted tank

I think the Fart smell is coming from rotting snails and the small tank .feed them frozen foods any for saltwater fish will work.when you set up the big tank the fart smell will increase but you should be use to it by then :kira:
perhaps your platys is a hybred they can't breed most are sterile.or some fish need insect larve to induce breeding.they sell insect larva for this purpose.im not sure if this is the case with platys.but im sure it something to that nature.
