    Nitrite spike

Thanks for the responses both! Byron - I wasn't aware that planted tanks had minimal nitrifying bacteria. Now that you say it it sounds obvious! Very interesting and thanks for teaching me something new! :) And slaphppy thank you for the water conditioner recommendations, typically i just...

    Nitrite spike

Hi there, i use the API test kit and have been using the "Microbe-Lift" brand of water conditioner. It's the same brand as the bacteria which I added which was called "Nite-Out" which specifically says it removes nitrite.. Do you think that's a gimmick? Thankfully I tested the nitrite again...

    Nitrite spike

Hi Colin, thanks for your message, can you elaborate on the above a bit please? I have sand rather than gravel but I am reluctant to interfere with it much more as I feel like that's what caused the spike in the first place.. Thanks!

    Nitrite spike

Hi all, My 300L tank has been setup for a circa 3 months and has been running smoothly. I initially did a silent cycle with fast growing plants and then gradually stocked from there. Last night I decided to remove a few plants (probably around 15-20% of the total plant life) during my weekly...

Lighting help - do I have enough?

Hi all, I have read online that for a planted tank I need between 20 and 40 lumens per litre of water to keep medium difficulty plants, and 40+ lumens p/litre for hard plants.. I have a 300L tank, and so using the above formula i would need a light unit which produces 6000 - 12000 lm. My...

    Dwarf Ambulia turning brown

Hey Byron, thanks again for the assistance here :) I posted my source water KH and GH yesterday above ( 20 and 25 respectively) albeit I appreciate these were with strip tests so maybe not that accurate. I've placed an order today for a liquid tests and they arrive on Saturday, so hopefully...

Thanks for this Barney, all makes sense, and wow never heard of Spotless Water before but what a good idea and as you say, a LOT cheaper! And believe it or not there is one about 15 mins from my house :)

    Dwarf Ambulia turning brown

Thanks Itiwhetu, So is your view that my lighting and nutrients are possibly not the cause, and that this is mostly due to high pH? I was really hoping to avoid using an RO unit. I had one for 5 years when I kept marines and I was keen to make my tropical experience a bit more user friendly...

    Dwarf Ambulia turning brown

Thanks Byron, any thoughts on the other question (about doubling the dosage of Microbe-Lift)? In regards to the pH, I think I’ll start a new thread about that. Not as to how to safely reduce it (you’ve answered that for me - nice one) but as to whether I should reduce or just leave it alone….

    Dwarf Ambulia turning brown

Thanks Byron, The previous test results posted were all using liquid tests, but unfortunately I only have strips for GH and KH. I have tested the source water a moment ago (using the same out-gassed sample from yesterday) and am getting 20 KH and around 20-25 GH (I think - photo attached of...

    Dwarf Ambulia turning brown

Thanks Byron.. On the back of the Microbe-lift bottle it has a list of the ingredients (photo attached). I have also checked my out-gassed tap water and you are bang on... 8.2. I feel this is too high and i am keen to bring down, but i'll probably post a separate thread for that to avoid going...
