    prettiest Badis badis...

Thanks! They are great fish. They do best in species-only tanks because in a community tank larger or active fish make them nervous.

    My first tank!

I really like your tank and it's amazing for a first effort.

    prettiest Badis badis...

I have a group of female and male scarlet badis in a 40 gallon for the past 4 years. They breed regularly and are a great little fish with interesting behaviors. Unfortunately, I added 6 Asian Stone Catfish a year ago and they reguarly eat all the badis eggs now. Just saw some fry this week...

🐶 POTM VOTE NOW - January 2026 Pet of the Month Contest

This is Cinnamon. She is a class pet in my 1st Grade classroom. I don't have a second picture with POTM sign because I'm at home. She is super gentle and tolerant. I always have a pet hamster in my classroom. Kids write letters to Cinnamon and she (me) writes back to them. We are...

    Male or female Scarlet Badis?

You may be right, although all my females (and there's been a lot) are always gray. They sometimes display shades of gray stripes and rarely display hints of color and never any permanent red coloration. It's not that uncommon for a submissive male to be gray around dominant males.

    Male or female Scarlet Badis?

Active fish or larger fish make Scarlet badis nervous. They also only eat live food and may be outcompeted by other fish due to being slow hunters.

    Male or female Scarlet Badis?

I could be wrong and it could be a female, but I don't think so. I think a 6 gallon is pretty small and 10 gallons would be better, so at most I'd only put 1 badis and no other fish. You could add some snails and shrimp, though. The shrimp, especially shrimplets, may be killed. Two male...

    Male or female Scarlet Badis?

Its probably a male. Females are very rare. Sometimes the subordinate males don't color up so that they appear female. I was lucky to get 2 females five years ago and I've had breeding ever since. The females don't typically have those reddish lines.

Need a recommendation for an online vendor

I can tell you where NOT to go: Arizona Aquatic Gardens. They sent me two fish that died in transit and the replacements were the wrong fish. They couldn't identify the species they sent me but assured me that they would get back with me after the holidays. I haven't heard anything since.

I think The Wet Spot is great. I've never received a bad fish from them.

Do you notice any negative effects from inbreeding? I've had that concern (with a different species) in my tank that have been inbreeding for five years.
