    Changing Water Hardness

Thanks - the tank had been up and running for close to 20 years. It only had a couple of fish in it, and unfortunately when I added some new ones a while back they introduced ich and wiped out the old fish I had in the tank. So, the biological filter is pretty well established. I treated for ich...

    Changing Water Hardness

Thanks for the reply. The surviving fish seems fine, but I don't want to have that kind of loss rate in the future. I guess I'll just keep up with small water changes, replacing the softened water with hard, till it is close to what the store uses. I don't think there is any way to acclimate...

    Changing Water Hardness

I’m restarting my 55 gallon tank. I filled it with water softener treated water, and once everything was ready added 7 tiger barbs. Two of the barbs died in the first 48 hours. I took a water sample to the fish store for testing. All of the levels were fine, but my water was very soft while...

Need Advice On Re-starting Fish Tank

I had a tank that was up and running for about 18 years, and it recently experienced a lot of problems and all the fish are gone. It’s a 55 gallon tank, and for years I had a pair of clown loaches in it, who were part of the original crew to populate the tank. I added three other fish to the...

Old Loach Is In Bad Shape

Thanls for the suggestions - unfortunatley, when I got home from work this evening the loach was dead. I'm letting the tank cool down and am cycling water to reduce the salt levels - which will take a few days. The one little pleco looks pretty lonely in the 55 gallon tank. Thanks again - I'll...

Old Loach Is In Bad Shape

One question before I try a commercial ich treatment: Is it safe to use a commercial treatment with salt? I’ve added about 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon to the tank. It would take some time to reduce the salinity safely. TIA

Old Loach Is In Bad Shape

Thanks for the replies. The fish seems a little better this morning - he is not on his side and is moving around a bit. The water temp has dropped a bit overnight to about 86, and I think I'll leave it there. It does look like he is geting fin rot now :-( I'll try some commercial meds tonight...

Old Loach Is In Bad Shape

Hi folks – I’m having a tank emergency here, and am not sure what steps to take. The tank has been up and running for about 18 years. In the last few years the only fish that have been around have been a pair of clown loaches. It’s a 55 gallon freshwater tank with UGF and off the side...
