Shang Hi, I'm not sure that is true. Media often takes the form of sponges rather than Bio-balls or other plastic blobs. I wouldn't say that the presence of sponge and carbon only would prevent a cycle. That said, I second what you are saying about the tank NOT being cycled with a Nitrate level...

I can't help ID the fish unfortunately, but if it were me, I would be looking to rehome the fish rather than killing them. Can you take them to your LFS? Or a friend with a tank? Someone on here may be willing to take them from you!

When I have a fish that needs isolating, usually because they have been naughty, I get a clear plastic tub (like the ones that you get strawberries in, with holes in the bottom) and sellotape it to the side of the tank to force it to float, then stick the fish in there for as long as necessary...

If you have problems, and they won't do anything about it, I have an AquaOne filter a CF1000 i think and it looks like the outbound spraybar on mine is the same as that one. I got with it an extension bar about 4 inches long - If you could acquire one of those from somewhere, it would do the job...
