There’s been a red-bodied, blue-finned form of Macropodus opercularis appearing in big box stores lately. They’re calling it the “Fire and Ice Paradise Fish”, and it’s actually quite impressive.
I’ve seen my male dageti try to mate with juvenile Dicrossus maculatus and Macropodus ocellatus in the presence of females of their own species. They’re just randy little buggers.
The fish in the cave, judging by the shape of the dorsal fin, might possibly be a male, although female Crenuchus also claim caves. My male grew from a 3/4 inch baby into a 3 inch beast in about a year.
I really miss Crystal Aquarium. So many species of fish I’d never encountered anywhere else. I bought my first Madagascar rainbows there in 1979. I can vividly remember the display tank in the window containing the largest cardinal tetras I’d ever seen.
My araguaiae never grow larger than 3 inches. Pictured is my late breeding male, which inexplicably died immediately after spawning. Luckily I have about 100 of his offspring growing out.
Will do. They’re only about 1” to 1.5” at this point. I had a lot of success with the species a decade ago and am excited to be able to work with them again. They’re very rare in the hobby for some reason.
