It is unlikely rainbowfish will spawn unless you specifically set up optimal conditions for them. I always keep males only, as there is no aggression and they display to each other so you get much more colourful fish.
If you are limited in numbers you can have, I would keep just one sex. When I had a smaller tank I kept a group boesemani ranbow - 3 males and 1 female. They used to annoy the female so I swapped her for another male. The group of males got along fine and had no one to harass.
I have mainly the standard type, but there are a few giant and a few brown. They all explore together and sleep together though, despite their differences.
External filters are almost always better than an internal. It doesn't have to be limited by size so holds better parts and a larger volume. In turn this increases the overall volume of your tank with an external. Make sure you set your externals output on high though, as many can be adjusted...

Top one is one of my Boesemani. He is more of a 'normal' fish shape, where these ones are longer with more elaborate fins. Plus the Boesemani are half blue, but these are half silver.

Thanks for your reply I actually have 6 boesemani, you can see one in the background of pic 2. They are clearly blue and yellow, and they are a shorter body shape. These guys are a longer body type , with more elaborate fins. They are a silver and orange rather than blue.
