My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Mother is at least a third smaller than the father. This weekend I am going to go and get a small nursery tank. When I set my tank up originally I had no intention of breeding fish, nor did i expect them to breed. But to allow them to live as naturally as possible, then I have to respect their...

My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Thanks for the advice. When moving the fry to the nursery tank, should the mother also be moved, or just the fry by themselves?

My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Update: Few fry remain, maybe around 50. Strangely, the male and female have separated, but each is looking after a small group of fry each. The female remains in the back left of the tank, the male in the centre at the front. Both chase other fish away.

My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Thanks. The rocks just came from LFS and I am afraid that I can't remember the name of the other plant in the tank - this is my first tank and at the time of setting it up last September I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to plant names other than what looked good!

My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Update: It looks as though the father is beginning to lose interest... Last night he had moved to the other end of the tank and left the female to it. This morning he was back with her, but again this evening he has moved to the other end of the tank and is 'hanging out' with the tiger barbs...

My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Thanks for the info / advice - very useful. The two adults and their fry have taken over almost half of the tank - they seem to be doing a very good job so far! The male is about 10cm long, the female 7cm. Here are some photos I took last night.

My Firemouth Cichlids Have Had Babies

Hi folks, My two firemouths have just had babies - they are just a vibrating mass of tiny things at the moment. The mother is staying very close to them, and moves them between pits that have been dug in the substrate. The father (the King of the tank) keeps the other fish away. I am feeding...

Advice Needed - Is This White Spot?

I can happily report that the markings are gone this morning - how very strange. Maybe in some way related to the brief drop in temperature, but who knows. I should have said in earlier posts that all other tankmates are unaffected, it was only the firemouths. Thanks for comments folks.

Advice Needed - Is This White Spot?

Yeah, it does kind of look like the colloration, but it has definetely not been there until a few days ago. And all three of them have it.

I have edited the photos - suspect marks have been circled. Am I being paranoid?!

Advice Needed - Is This White Spot?

Hello folks, I have been running a 180L Juwel Rio for 6 months. Never had any trouble, weekly 15% water change, occasional plant fert. I have three firemouths (2 m, 1 f) - each one looks as though they are carrying air bubbles on them. I have not seen white spot on any fish before, but I am...

Bolivian Ram V Red Tailed Black Shark

I have a RTBS in 180L along with three firemouths, 6 tiger barbs, 6 danios and a couple of small bristlenose plecs. All get on very well - sometimes there is a bit of jostling between the firemouths and the RTBS, but it is all show and never amounts to much. RTBS has grown from 3cm to 8cm, was...
