    well bruce the plec has gone to his new home tonight, and i've just done a 80% water change and the remaining fish seem a lot happier. going to get some new gravel and a water testing kit at the weekend. :good:

    thanks, i think that it makes sense to change the gravel now. i'm now on the lookout for a cheap water testing kit.... i'm soooooooooo tempted to go with the paper ones.

    welcome to the forum, i'm a newbie too and have had lots of great advice already, its a great place to learn how to do things properly. its alot to take in so my advice to a fellow newbie would be to read, read and read until you go crazy :hyper: and....... do it right and do it once :good:

    which? fish in cycle or fishless cycle? are the paper test kits really that bad? i dont really wanna be forking out £25 on a liquid test kit... but i am a cheapskate.

    hmmmm perhaps i should give them up with the plec tonight and do a fishless cycle? i could always get them back? or maybe they would be better off in another home until i know what i'm doing. don't want anymore casualties. in the mean time i'll have a read up on a fish in cycle....

    this is gonna sound bad now... I got it home from my aunties, bearing in mind it was very dirty, i put the fish in a bowl with water from the tank, took out ALL :/ the water, gravel, scenery from the tank and rinsed it all clean, scrubbed as much of the green gunk away from inside the tank...

    lost a platty tonight and the other one doesnt look very well. he's just hiding under the bridge. when the plec goes tomorrow i'll only be left with 2 tiger barbs and 3 tetras. think i need to start from scratch and make sure all the levels are right and build the tank up to how i want it...

    thanks blubble, the plec is getting picked up on weds and taken to its new (much larger) home. I will be replacing it with 2 or 3 ottos and some more tetras. I will also be having a little redesign of the inside of the tank over the next few weeks so no doubt i'll be asking a lot more...
