What's a good sized tank for female bettas and what's a good number to keep?

So I had a betta for 2 1/2 years in a 5 gallon aquarium and he died the other day. :( I want to get more fish now but I'm not sure what to get. I was thinking about getting an angelfish. Is this a good idea or should I get something smaller?

This is the most beautiful fish I've ever had, and the closest to a pink betta I've ever seen. I found him at Wal-mart so you can probably find one similar at a local pet store. Sorry it's not a very good picture, but it's good enough to see that he's a light pink color.
