Thanks Andy ... going to ebay right now to check it out. Had really bad advice from LFS, am now in the middle of a fish in cycle crisis with ammonia sky high and have lost some of my fish. Wish I hadn't listened to them.

Looking at test kits for my aquarium water .. Tetra do them for ammonia and for nitrite and they look like they'll be easy to use, but do you think they're ok or is there something better? I'm in the UK. I'd appreciate your advice.

Thanks again Waterdrop for your good advice. Really happy we don't have to listen to that awful noise and can use the filter instead. It's producing little bubbles on the surface, so all sounds well. Maplethistle

Thank you so much, so the water filter that we have (Fluval 2) which is making the water ripple at the top of the tank is all we need? What great news. Well, money wasted on the pump, but a quieter life.

Yes we have a filter, but the pet shop said we'd need either plants or an air pump to get oxygen into the water.
