But if I'm only adding 10 gallons of water to the 55 Gallon (probably a little less because that sponge filter takes up a lot of volume), wouldn't the fish only have a couple inches of water when it's spread out across the 55gal? Or should I just put 2 and 2 together and add a little more water...

I don't exactly rinse it the filter because I was told I wouldn't have to for about a year. I just do a 20% water change with tap water every week to week and half. And are you saying I should add around 45 gallons of new water, get it to the correct temp and parameters, then add everything...
