When we set up our tank all we did was put gravel, wood and plants in (a food tablet was put under each plant). We put in the filter and heater and after filling the tank with water and aqua safe, turned them on and left the tank for a good 2 weeks. We also had the lights on for 12 hrs a day...

I'd say the shark is the most likely culprit. Our rainbow shark likes to terrorise anything that comes into his patch, especially at feeding time.

I personally wouldn't keep a cichlid with those fish because of their aggression, although i don't know much about them.

I have my lights on a timer for 12 hrs a day.But we have some large plants that cover quite a bit of the surface.

My water was quite murky for a while. We put it down to the bogwood (even though i'd soaked it before putting it in the tank). We changedthe filter pads to some that had a much tighter weave and they seemed to work. :D

How often should i do water changes? We did one on tues so was thinking 1/4 water change weekly until it settles again

We gauge how much food to feed our fish by how long it takes to dissapear. If it's eaten in less than a minute, then chances are they're not getting enough. Any longer than 2 - 3 mins and they are probably getting too much.

I have to admit, i've never to been to a LFS that has been really bad. Although there is a "World of water" near me that is nicknamed "World of slaughter" or "World of whitespot". I've never been impressed with the quality of the fish and the staff don't seem very knowledgeable.

I am dreading having to do this to any of my fish. I have got a job in an aquatics department at a garden centre. I know i will have to euthanaise fish from time to time so am gonna have to grin and bear it but at least i will have been shown the correct and humane way. :(

Hi i'm petit_pablo's other half, i brought him his tank for xmas and we've got a bit obsessed with fish and are already talking about getting another tank! Anyway this looks like a good informative forum so am hoping to get lots of info. :thumbs:
