It's all about personal preference. It might have made your water cloudy because you didn't wash it properly? Keep in mind that you must clean gravel numerous times before putting it in your tank.

Fluval make some decent filters, both internal and external. They're good in terms of price aswell. :good:

I would hold back on the Ottos for now. I usually put in a clean-up-crew of any sort a couple of weeks after the main fish go in so that the tank establishes a bit more, and gives the cleaners more of a job to do!

As essjay said, your fish have whitespot by the sounds of it. Most fish stores sell ich/whitespot medication.

More then likely baby shrimp. They tend to breed like rabbits, and if you have a tank dedicated to them you'll most definitely end up with hundreds.
