The clamps would control the air but the valve is insterted straight into the plastic reservior pipe so it needs to be a valve. Thanks for the idea though

Hi I used the sand you mention loads of times in my fish tanks its fine never had a problem with it. Like all sands make sure you rinse them loads in flowing water you will be amazed at the rubbish that comes out it before you put it in the tank. Loader
