Setting up a new aquarium after 25 years out of the hobby

If I were you, I'd call the water treatment department & talk to one of the engineers about the city water issue. Seems like a good place to start, anyhow. I do use some distilled water in mine, but only if I've got evaporation. For normal water changes, the city water here (sitting out for a...

Here's What I've Learned About 3-Spot Gourami Breeding, Fry Habits, Etc.

Well good luck to you too! I've learned one other thing ~ the hard way ~ clown loaches DO eat fry. At first I thought I was losing some fry for various reasons other than predation, but nope: I caught a clown in the act. There's nothing for it now; tank is so heavily planted, a few will make it...

    Sexing Croaking Gouramis (Trichopsis vittata)

This is SO exciting. As one who's just experienced her first gourami spawn (well 4 back-to-back spawns), I can't wait to hear about how your fry develop. I've had such a great time watching four separate groups growing (the oldest 2 months, it's AMAZING how much bigger they are than the newest...

    Sexing Croaking Gouramis (Trichopsis vittata)

I've sat here watching my 3-spots conclude four successful hatchings, over the last two months & can say that if the croaking gouramis behave at all like the 3-spots, the female does display & circle. She even opens her gill covers and circles the mate ~ that phase of the courtship reminds me of...

Here's What I've Learned About 3-Spot Gourami Breeding, Fry Habits, Etc.

    1. In a 40-gallon tank, both parents seem oblivious to the fry. 2. The discovery of Hikari first-food for fry kept me from losing all the babies. 3. With spawns spaced out every two weeks or so, the older fry don't eat the younger ones, BUT with that said, the survivors from Spawn #1 are big...

Help me with my substrate please?

Most of us have done something similar. The one time (years ago) I tried this, I failed to "fix" the problem but ran with it anyhow. After the tank settled, it ended up looking cool, but I do like a more natural, wild tank. Sorry!

    PH Problem

I'd do an experiment: take a pinch of the sand, but it in vinegar (or add a couple drops of stronger acid) & see if it reacts. You know, the 'is this rock limestone?' test. That's where I'd start, anyhow. Also, have you tested the rocks? Maybe they didn't affect the pH in a larger tank, but...

Molly Fish Stuck on Filter Inlet

That is so true: at the big stores (sadly, even at some smaller ones) nobody knows anything any more. I could never work in one of those places; I'd make everybody fill out an adoption form and submit to a home visit before they could buy so much as a generic guppy from me.

Update on suprise blue gourami empire

First, I really enjoy reading the posts on this forum. I mean, how does anyone survive a pandemic self-quarantine without a passion for aquariums??? Anyhow, at the end of January, my pair of blue gouramis surprised me with fry. Four lots of fry later, I moved Dad to bachelor quarters. My...
