Do you know the size of the bowl she's in? Bettas typically need at least 2.5 gallons (with a heater and filter) in order to thrive.

I've often seen a belly go pale before bloating begins. One more question - any stress stripes, or is it just the paleness? I take it the change of color is limited to his belly?

I don't personally have any experience with this type, but you can try searching YouTube for a tutorial video. That's what I usually do with a new piece of hardware that I'm not sure how to set up.

The filtration capacity on that would make me a little nervous, although it wouldn't be impossible to manage. You would have to REALLY stay on top of water changes, which would be a fair amount of work. Alternatively, you could upgrade your filter.

I'd say keep testing the pH and if it doesn't come down enough for your liking (I like to try and keep mine midway through the range), then add a chemical pH corrector.
