I've got some snails in my tank which seem to be multiplying by the minute, are they a good or bad thing. do they eat the algae? how can i keep them iunder control?

hello, i recently set a new tank up, i have a plant in it and a stone as yet, but the stone has got a rusty covering and the sides of the tank are getting patches of this rusty looking stuff, help. what is it and what do i need to do

yes the new fish were about the same size as the rest and i did change the decor round so they all have a fair chance of making new terrotry, im still pondering on how the new fish just suddenly died, there was nothing wrong with him visibly, its the other older fish thts been picked on
