What is this white growth? Infection?

Taking a closer look, it looks like a white growth inside of his body. Seems bad - got some Tetra Lifeguard and trying it now.

1 of my fish is only swimming at surface of the water

This is good to hear as I've been wanting a few more females (only 1 female now). My fish store doesn't have any more of my fish but I've requested they get some more. I'll look at getting some floating plants, I haven't found any that I particularly like yet. Does having a background affect...

1 of my fish is only swimming at surface of the water

Hello, I have a 10 gallon tank with 6 Pseudomugil Furcatus and several plants. This is my first aquarium. I got the fish from a nearby fish store last week, and I think they've been well. They've been active, eating, and such. However, today one of the fish has spent most of his day at the...

    Ammonia won't drop below 1ppm

Day 35 Update: My cycle is nearly complete. ~3ppm ammonia and corresponding nitrite are being processed into nitrates in just over 24 hours. In retrospect I think I had 2 "stalls": 1. Day 18: My pH had dropped to around 6.4 and ammonia stopped dropping. Adding 1tsp of baking soda to get pH...

Thanks guys! We may go with some sparkling gouramis and dwarf corydoras. I think they look really neat My water company hasn't called me back yet. I believe the water hardness around here is 1.5 dH, hopefully I can confirm with them. Also the light I have is a 19 watt fluorescent bulb. There's...

Thanks we will look at different types of fish. Are there any general guidelines we should look out for when picking fish suitable for our 10g? Under an inch, can handle soft water, etc. Those fish you linked are very cool. I have never seen them before! I guess I have never thought about...

    Ammonia won't drop below 1ppm

Thanks for your help & advice! After the first 2 4ppm doses, each redose has been only 2ppm. I reduced it since I had read that re-dosing to 2ppm was better. So in total my tank has processed 12ppm ammonia. I have also done two 75% water changes since beginning this cycle. Using the 1 ammonia...

    Ammonia won't drop below 1ppm

Wow I re-dosed ammonia to 2ppm yesterday and it is 0 today! It is like magic. Question: I've re-dosed ammonia 4 times counting today, and my nitrites are still off the charts high. Should I keep re-dosing ammonia or should I just wait at this point for nitrites to go down? Also, after actually...

I live in Seattle, WA. Indeed there's a few pet stores around my area that are not petsmart/petco. I should be able to visit a few this weekend. I hope they have some of the fish you mention! I really can't decide on things unless I see them in person

I see. So by keeping the fish in a tank too small they are much more prone to disease and a shorter lifespan. We will look at some nano fish and see if there's any that we like. We haven't considered much beyond what we commonly see at the pet stores. It's so much easier to find fish we like...

Oh, good to know! The filter has been running with the sponge, carbon, and beads for 3 weeks. Should I keep the carbon there, or toss it and get it over with? I probably don't need it from the sounds of it. So I actually got this tank for free from a neighbor who was moving out and couldn't...

    Ammonia won't drop below 1ppm

The distilled and tap water both show 0 ppm ammonia for sure. Today I checked my tank and the ammonia is between 0 and 0.25 ppm! Low pH value was likely the culprit - it was 6.4 all of last week. My water change raised it to 7.0 and things seem to be going again.

Cool - I like the pygmy swords a lot. I'll keep an eye out for them. It seems there is some additional research I need to do on fish! Thanks for the great info.
