Are you certain you are following the instructions for testing Nitrate down to the last detail?  Is it a liquid API test kit?  If so, don't follow the instructions on the bottle...I had the same issue when I started out, just following instructions on the bottle and was consitently getting 0...

Is there a chance you could have knicked the top edge at any point, maybe while closing your lid (if you've got one)?  Glass is only as strong as it's weakest point, which is the edge/corners.  If you've knicked the top and created a shell in the edge it's only a matter of time before the shell...

My pet peeve! We are running a 2213 filter in our smaller tank and I have the same problem with the absence of trays, especially when it comes to changing the course blue sponge, having to remove, contain and then refill with those little brown balls is a nightmare! The pro 2 is awesome...

It was recommended to me by our LFS to only purchase Angels in odd numbers, i.e 3, 5 and so on. On that note, we brought the remaining 2 Platinum Angels they had in stock and they get on just fine with no aggression towards each other or our other tank inhabitants....
