I've no idea about tanks and their set up. I thought that maybe the filter also caused the bubbles or is that completely wrong? See what I mean! If there's no bubbles, will the fish suffocate?

no surface movement at all - totally calm and smooth. Also, would not have the first clue about taking apart the pump. How long can I safely leave the tank in this condition?

I've tried what you suggested but nothing has happened. Can the pump stay off for a few days without the fish suffering?
